UK ETA Required for Commonwealth Games 2026—and for Most Visitors After

The UK is introducing an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for visitors from over 100 countries, starting with Commonwealth Games attendees in 2026.

The UK is rolling out a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, similar to the US ESTA or EU ETIAS. Citizens from over 100 countries will need to obtain an ETA before traveling to the UK, even for short visits. The system is being piloted with Commonwealth Games 2026 attendees but will become mandatory for all eligible visitors.

The ETA is a pre-travel authorization that you apply for online. It's not a visa—it doesn't grant entry, just permission to travel. You'll still need to pass immigration screening on arrival. The process is straightforward: fill out an online form, pay a fee (likely £10–15), and receive approval within days. Most people will get it without issue, but the system adds a step and a cost to UK travel.

The UK ETA is coming in 2026—plan ahead if you're visiting or traveling back to the US.

If you're planning to visit the UK in 2026 or beyond, apply for your ETA well before your trip. Check the UK government website for your country's eligibility and the application portal. Keep your ETA reference number safe—you'll need it when you travel. If you're a UK resident or citizen, this doesn't affect you. If you're a visa holder (work, family, student), you don't need an ETA for your visa-sponsored stay, only for trips outside the UK and back.
